History of SITE

History of SITE

The Sindh Institute of Teacher Education (SITE) was established by the Government of Sindh to address the critical shortage of qualified teacher educators in the province. SITE emerged from the recognition that sustainable educational reform in Sindh requires not just better teachers, but better teacher educators — those who train and develop the teachers themselves.

SITE's M.Phil. in Education (Teacher Educator Development) is the first program of its kind in Pakistan, developed in partnership with the University of Oxford and the Malala Fund (2022–2026).

Key Milestones

  • 2008 — Durbeen begins work in public education sector of Sindh
  • 2016 — Durbeen established as educational nonprofit; B.Ed. program launched
  • 2022 — Partnership with University of Oxford and Malala Fund to develop M.Phil. curriculum
  • 2022–2026 — Collaborative curriculum development with Oxford experts and Pakistani subject specialists
  • 2025 — SITE formally established as apex body for teacher education in Sindh
  • 2025 — DARE-RC Research Project launched on Language Planning & Policy
  • 2026 — M.Phil. in Education (Teacher Educator Development) launched — first of its kind in Pakistan

Our Foundation

SITE builds on the experience and learnings of Durbeen's Government Elementary College of Education (GECE) program, which has been operating B.Ed. programs in Sindh's government colleges. The insights from this work directly informed the design of SITE's programs and research agenda.
